ATTRIBUTED TO MIYAO EISUKE: A GILT-DECORATED BRONZE FIGURE OF A MAN, 19TH CENTURY The bronze figure depicts a standing man in animated pose, set upon a carved rectangular wooden base with pierced apron and scrolling feet. He leans forward slightly, one hand lowered and holding a small implement, the other arm relaxed before him, the composition conveying a moment of alert movement and characterful observation. The surface is richly worked in dark patinated bronze with extensive gilt decoration. His robe is embellished with large floral roundels, butterflies, leaves and scrolling ornament, the gilt highlights standing in strong contrast to the warm brown patina. The facial features, hair and hands are carefully modelled, lending the figure a naturalistic presence. Viewed from the reverse, the robe continues with further gilt floral and butterfly motifs, demonstrating the attention given to all aspects of the figure. The separately fitted wooden base, with its pierced foliate frieze and shaped supports, provides an elegant architectural setting for the bronze. Attributed to Miyao Eisuke, the figure reflects the refinement of Meiji-period Japanese decorative bronze work, where everyday or occupational subjects were transformed into highly finished display pieces for an international market. The combination of animated modelling, contrasting patination and finely applied gilt ornament is characteristic of this celebrated late 19th-century taste. Height: 26cm Weight: 900g
