ATTRIBUTED TO MIYAO EISUKE: A GILTDECORATED BRONZE FIGURE OF A MONKEY TAMER, 19TH CENTURY The bronze figure depicts a monkey tamer standing on a rectangular wooden base, his arms raised in animated gesture as a small monkey clambers across his shoulder. The subject is full of movement and character, the figure’s poised stance and expressive face giving the work a lively narrative quality. The costume is richly decorated in gilt, with stylised birds, bamboo, floral roundels and ornamental devices set against the dark patinated bronze. The monkey is carefully modelled, its textured fur and alert posture contrasting with the polished flesh tones and finely detailed robe of the tamer. The back of the robe is particularly elaborate, with gilt panels, bamboo, flowers and a prominent circular ornamental reserve, demonstrating the refined surface treatment associated with Meiji-period decorative bronzes. The fitted wooden base is similarly embellished with gilt scrolling ornament, enhancing the object’s presentation. Attributed to Miyao Eisuke, the figure belongs to a celebrated tradition of late 19th-century Japanese bronze sculpture produced for domestic and export display, where occupational and theatrical subjects were rendered with great technical finesse.
