MIYAO EISUKE: A GILT-DECORATED BRONZE FIGURE OF A FARMER, 19TH CENTURY The bronze figure depicts a standing farmer, modelled in an alert forward-leaning pose and holding a long-handled implement across the body. The figure is set upon a rectangular wooden base with bracket feet, its formal presentation lending the work the character of a refined Meiji-period display piece. The farmer is dressed in a short robe, the surface richly worked with scrolling foliate decoration and highlighted with gilt floral motifs. Further gilt detail appears at the sash, collar and head covering, contrasting with the warm brown patination of the bronze and drawing attention to the carefully articulated costume. The reverse is no less considered, with a gilt-framed panel bearing characters to the back of the robe. The coiffure and headgear are finely rendered, while the pose, implement and rustic subject place the figure within the Meiji fascination with occupational types, where everyday labour was transformed into highly finished decorative sculpture. Miyao Eisuke and the Miyao workshop were celebrated for gilt-decorated bronze figures combining lively modelling, detailed costume ornament and accomplished metalwork. This example reflects that tradition in its polished surfaces, crisp incised detail and theatrical treatment of a humble agricultural subject.
