AN INDIAN BLACK TWIN RAM AGATE STAFF HANDLE, 19TH CENTURY, INDIA Carved from black agate, this staff handle is formed as a balanced double-headed composition, with a ram’s head projecting from either side of the central body. The dark, highly polished stone gives the object a strong sculptural presence, its curved profile designed to sit across the top of a staff. Each ram’s head is rendered with stylised features, including rounded eyes, defined muzzles and deeply carved, sweeping horns. The twin arrangement creates a symmetrical form, while the central section is enriched with foliate ornament, giving the piece a decorative rhythm between animal and vegetal motifs.
