A CHINESE ROCK CRYSTAL "PRUNUS" AMULET, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) The amulet is carved from rock crystal, its translucent body worked in openwork relief to form a compact, rounded composition. The material has a clear, icy quality, with natural inclusions and internal veining visible through the polished surface. The carving is arranged around prunus branches and fruit-like rounded forms, the stems and leaves pierced to create a lively play of voids and solid surfaces. Incised detailing to the leaves adds texture, while the polished crystal catches the light across the raised carving. Prunus occupies an important place in Chinese decorative art, admired as a symbol of endurance, renewal and purity, flowering in the cold before spring. On a small amulet such as this, the motif would have carried auspicious associations as well as ornamental appeal.
