A CHINESE CIRCULAR LIDDED JADE SEAL BOX & COVER, 18TH-19TH CENTURY The circular seal box is carved from pale jade with soft green and russet inclusions, the shallow rounded body fitted with a corresponding domed cover. The interior retains red seal paste, indicating its use in connection with the application of seals, an essential element of Chinese scholarly, artistic and administrative practice. The cover is finely incised with a central medallion enclosing a stylised character, surrounded by radiating lotus-like foliage and scrolling vegetal ornament. A band of geometric key-fret decoration encircles the rim, continued on the lower section to create a balanced decorative scheme across the box and cover. Such boxes were made to contain seal paste used with carved personal seals, objects closely associated with literati culture, connoisseurship and the authentication of paintings, calligraphy and documents. The combination of jade, restrained carving and functional purpose reflects the refined taste of Qing-period scholarly accessories. Dating to the 18th-19th century, this example is notable for its tactile form, delicate surface engraving and survival with vivid red paste, preserving a strong sense of its original function.
