A CHINESE AUBERGENE MONOCHROME TRIPOD INSCENSE BURNER, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) The incense burner is of compressed rounded form, raised on three short feet and set with a broad, slightly everted mouth. It is covered in a deep aubergine monochrome glaze, the rich purple tone pooling darker in the recessed areas and around the rim, while lighter violet striations enliven the rounded body. The vessel’s restrained form places emphasis on glaze and silhouette rather than painted decoration. The glossy surface, rounded shoulder and low tripod stance give the piece a sense of weight and ceremonial stability, appropriate to its function as an incense burner. The underside reveals the three-footed construction, with small exposed areas at the feet where the glaze has worn or thinned. Monochrome-glazed wares were admired in the Qing dynasty for their refinement, colour and technical control. Aubergine glazes, with their saturated manganese-purple tones, were particularly valued for their visual richness, and here the colour gives a modestly scaled ritual object a striking decorative presence.
