A CHINESE JADE & FRESH WATER PEARL BROOCH SET ON GOLD, REPUBLIC PERIOD The brooch is fashioned as a flowering spray, the gold mount worked in open, scrolling stems and leaves set with polished green jade plaques. The front is arranged with pear-shaped jade leaves, each held in a fine gold setting, while freshwater pearls form flowerheads and a larger central blossom. The reverse reveals the construction of the mount, with a hinged pin fitting and gold marks visible to the lower stem. The design combines naturalistic ornament with the auspicious appeal of jade and pearl. The green jade leaves give the piece a vivid botanical character, while the pearls provide a soft lustre against the warm gold setting. The composition is light and decorative, with curling tendrils, small flower terminals and a balanced horizontal form suited to wear as a brooch. During the Republic period, Chinese jewellery often brought together traditional materials with forms suited to modern personal adornment. Jade retained its long-standing associations with refinement, virtue and status, while pearl-set floral jewellery reflected a taste for elegant, wearable luxury. This brooch sits within that transitional world, where Chinese materials and symbolism were adapted into fashionable early twentieth-century jewels. Compact, finely mounted and richly decorative, the brooch is a graceful example of Republic-period jade jewellery, combining auspicious material, floral symbolism and practical goldsmith work in a refined ornamental form.
