A CHINESE JADE "COIN STYLE" DISC PENDANT ON GOLD MOUNTS, REPUBLIC PERIOD Of circular disc form, this pendant is centred by a polished green jade plaque mounted within an ornate gold frame. The jade is of even, bright green tone with softer cloudy inclusions, its smooth convex surface contrasting with the crisp worked metal surround. The mount is elaborately fashioned with a beaded inner border, a twisted and applied outer rim, and a scrolling suspension loop above. The central gold fitting is worked in the manner of an openwork coin motif, with a square aperture and radiating points, recalling the form and symbolism of traditional Chinese cash coins. Such imagery carried associations of prosperity, good fortune and auspicious circulation, making it especially appropriate for personal ornament. The use of jade in jewellery during the Republic period reflects both continuity with earlier Chinese taste and the period’s broader interest in wearable luxury objects.
