A PAIR OF GILT DECORATED POWDER BLUE BOWLS, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) A pair of finely decorated Kangxi period porcelain bowls, each with a rich powder-blue ground and gilt ornament. The exterior is embellished with delicate gilt roundels, cloud scrolls and auspicious motifs, while the interior rims carry a more elaborate gilt border of diaper panels and reserved symbols. The contrast between the deep blue glaze and the fine gold decoration is especially characteristic of high-quality Kangxi taste. Powder-blue decoration was achieved by blowing cobalt pigment onto the porcelain surface before glazing, creating the mottled, textured blue ground visible here. During the Kangxi period, this technique was often combined with gilding to produce refined wares for elite domestic use and export markets. The gilt designs were applied over the glaze and are therefore more vulnerable to wear, making the surviving decoration an important part of the visual appeal. The bowls are shallow with flared sides and short foot rims. The white-glazed bases each bear a blue square mark within double circles. The decoration includes stylised shou medallions, associated with longevity, together with scrolling cloud forms and formal borders, giving the pair a highly auspicious decorative programme. Diameter: 22 cm Height: 7 cm
