A LARGE JADEITE 'DRAGON & BOY' VASE CHINA, 20TH CENTURY A large jadeite vase carved in high relief with a lively dragon winding around a tall, bamboo-form vessel. The composition is enriched with auspicious details, including lingzhi-form scrolls, fruiting branches, a small boy figure and layered openwork carving. The pale stone is accented by soft apple-green inclusions, used effectively to highlight parts of the decoration. The dragon is a traditional emblem of power, vitality and good fortune, while the boy figure suggests wishes for prosperity, continuity and family blessing. The vessel form, combined with the abundance of carved symbolic motifs, places the piece within the decorative and auspicious jadeite carvings popular in China during the 20th century. The carving is elaborate and deeply undercut, with pierced areas creating a sense of movement around the central vase. The polish and translucent quality of the stone emphasise the contrast between the creamy-white ground and green veining. Height: 16 cm
