A CHINESE BLUE & WHITE LIDDED VASE, KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722) Of ovoid baluster form, the vase is painted in vivid underglaze blue with lively figural scenes, including boys and attendants among clouds, flowering plants and large leafy sprays. The domed cover is similarly decorated with figures and floral motifs, surmounted by a blue-glazed knop. A narrow band of auspicious emblems and scrolling motifs encircles the shoulder below the cover. The decoration is characteristic of Kangxi blue-and-white porcelain, with strong cobalt tones, confident brushwork and a narrative quality often seen on late 17th- and early 18th-century wares. The scenes of boys and attendants may be read within the broader Chinese decorative vocabulary of auspicious imagery, associated with prosperity, continuity and good fortune. Condition details visible in the images include a crack running from the shoulder/rim area, old staining and firing specks to the foot and interior, and small chips or fritting around the cover rim and vase mouth.
