A PAIR OF MONUMENTAL CHINESE WHITE-GLAZED ROULEAU VASES Kangxi Period (1662–1722) Each vase is finely potted with an elongated cylindrical body rising to a broad shoulder and a tall, slightly splayed neck. The surfaces are covered in a smooth, translucent white glaze with a soft bluish tint, subtly pooling in the recesses of the decoration. The exterior is meticulously moulded in low relief with scrolling peony and foliate ornament arranged in continuous spiralling bands, the blossoms and foliage emerging gently from the glaze. The necks display further incised vertical motifs resembling stylised plantain leaves. Small iron spots and light glaze irregularities are visible throughout, characteristic of the period’s firing practices. The bases are neatly finished with an unglazed footrim exposing the pale body and a double-line underglaze blue circle at the centre. The interiors of the vases are uniformly glazed, and the substantial walls and height suggest a ceremonial or display function. Rouleau vases of this type were popular during the Kangxi reign, their tall, imposing forms lending themselves to both domestic display and temple furnishing. The restrained monochrome palette and refined incised ornament reflect the technical sophistication of early Qing porcelain production and the revival of classical decorative themes. Measurements: Height 75 cm Provenance: Private Collection, New York, 1990s
