A MASSIVE & RARE TURQUOISE-GROUND GRISALLE-PAINTED "DAYAZHAI" BIRD & FLOWERS, DISHBOWL, GUANGXU PERI The large dishbowl is of deep rounded form, rising from a broad recessed foot to a wide open mouth, its substantial scale giving the vessel a commanding presence. The exterior is enamelled in a clear turquoise ground, against which branches, fruit, flowers and birds are painted with delicate shading and fine linear detail. The interior is more restrained, with a pale celadon-toned well, allowing the richly painted exterior to remain the principal decorative field. The body is decorated with flowering and fruiting branches that extend across the curved surface in long, sinuous lines. Pink fruit, buds and blossoms are set among slender green leaves, while gnarled grey-brown branches provide structure and movement. On another face, grasses, white flowers and red pendant clusters emerge from rockwork, the handling combining botanical observation with decorative rhythm. The upper and lower borders are formed of yellow-ground bands filled with scrolling ornament and shaped reserves of birds among flowers, giving the vessel a formal frame. A red oval Dayazhai mark appears among the branches, integrating the inscription into the painted scheme rather than isolating it as a purely formal mark. The dishbowl’s form suggests a large presentation or display vessel, conceived as much for visual effect as for use. Its broad mouth, deep body and rounded profile provide an uninterrupted surface for the continuous garden imagery, while the recessed foot and plain interior retain the practical logic of the form. Dayazhai wares are closely associated with the late Qing court and the decorative taste of the Guangxu period, particularly the refined palette and garden imagery favoured in imperial domestic contexts. The combination of turquoise ground, bird-and-flower subjects, grisaille-style drawing and carefully placed inscription belongs to a distinctive late nineteenth-century enamelled porcelain vocabulary, in which auspicious natural imagery was rendered with elegance and restraint. This massive dishbowl is a rare and impressive Guangxu-period Dayazhai work, notable for its scale, clear turquoise ground and finely balanced bird-and-flower decoration.
