PROPERTY FROM THE PULVERER COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS the complete set of twelve woodblock prints, without printed preface, shunga, hashira-e, unsigned, circa 1785; each with collector's seal of Gerhard Pulverer to verso Horizontal hashira-e: each sheet approx. 12.5 x 66.5 cm, 4⅞ by 26⅛ in. A masterpiece of shunga [lit. spring pictures] by Kiyonaga. The closely-cropped narrow hashira-e format dramatically captures the amorous couples in the throes of passion. The title Sode no maki, or ‘Handscroll for the Sleeve’, suggests that it was designed to be carried furtively inside the sleeve of a kimono.
