PROPERTY FROM THE PULVERER COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS each a woodblock print, surimono, the first embellished with metallic pigment and embossing, both signed Gakutei, sealed Yashima, the first privately issued for the Kamige Suigyo Poetry Circle, circa late 1820s, the second published by Tsumura Isakichi of Akashi, circa 1890s; the first with collectors’ seals of Hayashi Tadamasa, Henri Vever and Gerhard Pulverer; the second with seal of Gerhard Pulverer only Each shikishiban surimono: 21.2 x 18.5 cm, 8⅜ by 7¼ in. (the first) 20.6 x 18.4 cm, 8⅛ by 7¼ in. (the second) The original of this design was published by the Suigyo Poetry Circle in the late 1820s. The second print is from a large group of surimono made as facsimile reproductions by Tsumura Isakichi of Akashi near Kobe in the 1890s. Four distinctly different groups of such copies have been identified and dubbed Groups A, B, C and D. They were produced both in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; each group has their own characteristics.
