PROPERTY FROM THE PULVERER COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS woodblock print, from the series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran), signed Oju Naniwa no zu o motte Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai, using a picture of Osaka, by special request), censor’s seal kiwame (approved), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1834, 1st state; with collector's seal of Gerhard Pulverer to verso Horizontal oban: 36.8 x 25 cm, 14½ by 9⅞ in. Mount Tenpo was an artificial hill built in 1832 from dredging silt at the mouth of Osaka's Aji River and quickly became a popular tourist destination. Viewed from an elevated, bird’s-eye view perspective, the composition feels more reminiscent of a map print. Hokusai unusually inscribed the print ‘using a picture of Osaka, at special request’, acknowledging that the design was based on a secondary source.
