PROPERTY FROM THE PULVERER COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS woodblock print, from the series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai), censor’s seal kiwame (approved), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1834, 1st state; with collector's seal of Gerhard Pulverer to verso Horizontal oban: 38.5 x 25.7 cm, 15⅛ by 10 ⅛ in. Built in 1673, the Kintai [lit. Brocade Sash] Bridge spans the Nishiki River in western Japan with its five wooden arches resting on stone pillars. The slanting rain that distinguishes this early printing was omitted in later editions. The Kintai Bridge was also depicted by Utagawa Hiroshige II (1826-1869) [see Lot 230].
