PROPERTY FROM THE PULVERER COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS woodblock print, from the series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai), censor’s seal kiwame (approved), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1834, 1st state Horizontal oban: 37.9 x 25.2 cm, 14⅞ by 9⅞ in. Built in 1575, the Tsukumo Bridge in Fukui was strategically designed with a wooden northern half – destructible in times of enemy advance – and a more durable stone southern half. The far bank shows sheets of the renowned local Echizen hosho paper put out to dry.
