PROPERTY FROM THE PULVERER COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS woodblock print, from the series Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces (Shokoku meikyo kiran), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai), censor’s seal kiwame (approved), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1834, 1st state Horizontal oban: 38.4 x 25.5 cm, 15⅛ by 10 in The Drum Bridge at Kameido was celebrated for its dramatically steep arch and its wisteria-draped pergola, visible to the lower right; though here, the blossoms have faded and only foliage remains. The bridge leads to Tenmangu Shrine, built in 1662 on reclaimed land to honour the scholar-statesman Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), and was one of Edo's most beloved scenic spots.
