PROPERTY FROM THE PULVERER COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS woodblock print, aizuri-e, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei), signed Saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Iitsu, the former Hokusai), censor’s seal kiwame (approved), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), early 1831, blue outline; with collector's seal of Gerhard Pulverer to verso Horizontal oban: 25.5 x 37.1 cm, 10 by 14⅝ in. Passenger, pleasure and cargo boats are at sail in the bay of Edo around Tsukuda Island. In the foreground, the triangular supports around the cargo in the largest boat answers the conical shape of Mount Fuji. The subtleties of the newly imported Berlin blue pigment, the only colour used in this early printing, is fully exploited by the use of delicate graduations and small areas of over-printing.1 This is one of the first five designs from the series of which all were printed entirely in shades of Berlin blue.
