PROPERTY FROM A EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION lacquer on wood Executed circa 1960. 80 x 175.2 cm , 31½ by 69 in. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the Association des Amis d'Alix Aymé. It was in the early 1960s that Alix Aymé began producing large-format lacquer works, such as the present example. During this period, she created a series of compositions depicting woodland scenes animated by young women, as well as various European urban landscapes. Known works from this group include a Spanish Basque village, several views of Dubrovnik, and a major Provençal landscape now held at the Musée de Provence in Marseille. The palette dominated by browns, golds, and reds is characteristic of this phase of her production. Several of these large lacquer works were exhibited at the Galerie Rauch in Monte Carlo in 1961, and later in Paris at the Galerie Cambacérès in 1965. At this time, Alix Aymé was at the height of her technical mastery of lacquer. She was still able to obtain high-quality natural lacquer from Japan through a supplier based in Tokyo, which explains the remarkable state of preservation of these works.
