signed, with one seal of the artist (lower left) ink and colours on paper, framed 63.8 x 62.6 cm, 25⅛ by 24⅝ in. In his landscapes, as well as in his depictions of earth and water, Lin Fengmian was equally concerned with the realistic rendering of atmospheric phenomena, a subject particularly cherished by the painters of Impressionism. By adapting the techniques of oil painting to the interplay of light between the dark tonalities of water and sky, he succeeded in creating a compelling sense of distance and depth.
