PROPERTY FROM A SWEDISH PRIVATE COLLECTION Height 51 cm, 20⅛ in. Arriving in China along the Silk Road, the so-called 'Celestial Horses' of the Ferghana Valley rose to ascendency in elite Tang dynasty contexts as symbols of status, wealth and military might. Glazed in the characteristic sancai glaze of a particularly vibrant amber tone, the present figure immortalises the stocky barrel and powerful legs of these beloved horses painstakingly produced to accompany a prince or local elite into the afterlife. The dating of this lot is consistent with the result of a thermoluminescence test, Oxford Authentication Ltd., no. 766t48, dated 15th July 1996.
